Preparations For Having A MRI Examination

You may eat normally and go about your daily routine. Continue to take any medication prescribed by your doctor unless otherwise directed. You may choose to wear comfortable clothing with no metal fasteners (zippers, belt buckles, etc.) such as a warm up suit or elastic waist slacks. Otherwise, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown. You will be asked to leave any metal objects from your person along with other valuables such as coins, jewelry, watches, glasses, credit cards, keys and hair pins in a safe place outside the scan room.

Contraindications To Having A MRI Examination

Because of the nature of the magnetic field and the potential for harmful effects associated with metallic objects in the field, there are certain conditions that could prohibit a person from having a MRI exam as follows:

Cardiac Pacemaker
Cerebral Aneurysm Surgical Repair Clips
Spinal Cord Stimulator (Neurostimulator/Tens-Unit)
Foreign Metal Fragments Or Objects
(a preliminary x-ray of the suspicious area will be preformed prior to the exam to evaluate the presence and position of the metal fragment and determine a treatment plan).

If any of the above conditions exist, please inform your physician or the MRI technologist before your examination is scheduled or performed. The MRI technologist will conduct an interview prior to the examination to review your medical history.
