Kidney Imaging (Renal Scan)
What is Kidney or Renal Imaging?
Renal Scans allow the physician to
monitor the flow or urine, the degree of any blockage and access the
amount of scarring in the kidney tissue.
What takes place during the test?
A small needle or IV will be placed in
the arm where it will remain for most of the test. You will then be
injected through the IV with a radionuclide material and scanned for
approximately 40 minutes. During the scan, you will lie on the imaging
table with the camera positioned above or below you while several images
are taken. Also during the scan, you will be given a diuretic through
the IV to speed up flow through the urinary tract. Pediatric exams
require catheter insertion from the beginning of the test until
completion to help keep the bladder empty and decrease chance of urinary
back-up.
How long will the test take to
complete?
Approximately 45 minutes.
