Thyroid Scan
What is a Thyroid Scan?
A Thyroid Scan is performed to evaluate
thyroid nodules and diagnose hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
What takes place during the test?
A Thyroid Scan takes place over a two day
period. Day one you will receive 2 capsules containing radioactive
iodine. You should experience no ill side effects from the dose.
Additionally, the radioactive material is harmless to you or anyone you
come into contact. Due to the iodine content within seafood, you should
refrain from eating any seafood following the dose until the scan is
completed. You will return the following day (day 2) within 24 - 36
hours of the day one dose for the scan of the thyroid area lasting
approximately 1 1/2 hours. During the scan, you will lie on the imaging
table with the camera positioned above or below you while several images
are taken.
How long will the test take to
complete?
Day dose one will take approximately 10
minutes followed by a 24 hour delay and a 1 1/2 hour scan.
